Features

Plotjack is a storybook you are not supposed to touch. Here is everything you can touch anyway.

Rewrite the page

Every page has underlined words waiting to be changed. Play a card on one: swap a noun, change an adjective, rub out a word, add a letter, fudge a number, change what somebody does, or recast a character completely. You get up to three changes per page, paid for in Ink, and you get a little more Ink every page.

Then press Make It So. Mortimer retells the page with your changes as if they were always there, and the story carries on from wherever you left it.

A page of Book One on a phone, with the words you can change underlined

A narrator with feelings

Mortimer Quill reads every page aloud, in his own voice, and reacts to what you did to it. His Exasperation goes up with every edit and down when you leave a page alone. It is never a fail state. It just unlocks worse material.

Mortimer says"You have given me 'damp'. For a dragon. I want that noted."

Hand-made cut-paper art

Each scene is built from layers of cut paper that shift as you tilt your phone. Characters are paper cutouts with their own entrances. Change a character and a new cutout arrives to take over. Change an adjective and the picture follows: tiny things shrink, sparkly things sparkle, upside down things are upside down.

Retellings that remember

People wrote the books, every page and the large majority of the retellings. For the odd combination nobody wrote, Mortimer improvises, and each improvisation is kept so the next person gets the same one. Recasts and big changes carry forward, so a goose made king on page one is still king on page six.

Bookmarks, grades and prizes

Every chapter offers side goals called Bookmarks, like promoting the goose or getting through a page without touching it. Finish a chapter and Mortimer marks it in a Book Report, from A+ all the way down to See Me After Class. Good grades earn Prize Packs with new words to play. In Book Two, the Case Files keep your Bookmarks across games, with Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers and a wall of noir Commendations.

Today's Page

One page, one goal and the same hand of cards for everyone, every day. Use only verbs. Make it shorter. Get the goose into it. Keep a daily streak and, once enough people have played, see how your score compares.

Your Story, and remixes

At the end of a chapter, Your Story plays back your version of the book, page by page, with the pictures as you changed them. Copy the link and send it to someone. They can read it, then Jack In on top of your edits and send it back worse.

Made to be played by everyone

After Dark

An optional mode for adults (18+). Same art, same story, but with swearing and a cheekier narrator. It is R-rated comedy with no sexual content, and it is off unless you switch it on.

Further along, we plan optional word packs and a few books for adults only. Some of them may include gore or sexual content, so they will be kept clearly separate from the main shelf, locked until an adult opts in, and never mixed into the 13+ books.
